swearing in of Ms. Safia Galm as the new President of the ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨ University Students
Association (KeMUSA). This momentous occasion not only ushered in the third Lady President of
KeMUSA in a row but also proudly welcomed the association’s first Muslim Lady President, signaling a
new chapter of diversity and progressive leadership within the university.
The solemn yet celebratory ceremony was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. John Kobia Ataya,
Members of the University Management, Senate and Students, and gracefully presided over by the
university’s chaplain, Rev. Dr. Jennifer Lairangi. With profound honour, Safia Galm and her Vice
President-elect Chris K. Maina took their oaths of office, officially assuming their pivotal roles to
champion student welfare and foster a vibrant university experience.
The event saw a strong emphasis on leadership, vision and student centricity from the university’s Vice
Chancellor Rev. Prof. John Kobia Ataya. In his congratulatory address, the Vice Chancellor lauded the
newly sworn in President, encouraging her to embrace proactive leadership. He subtly defined the
essence of a true leader’s vision, highlighting the interplay between “sight”, what one perceives with the
eyes, and “insight”, the profound ability to discern beyond the immediate, envisioning possibilities with
the mind. This powerful message underscored the importance of forward thinking and a deep
understanding of the student body’s evolving needs. He further encouraged President Safia to lead with
an unwavering commitment to vision and inclusion, ensuring all students feel represented and valued
across the campuses.
A notable proposition from the Vice-Chancellor was the concept of Emeritus Towers in KeMU. He
passionately appealed to all emeritus presidents and Former council members to lend their invaluable
wisdom and goodwill to spearhead the establishment of foundational structures for this ambitious idea,
ensuring its nurturing and eventual realization. Reaffirming the university’s dedication to its students,
the Vice-Chancellor pledged his unwavering support for student activities through the KeMUSA
President’s leadership, reiterating his core vision as being predominantly student-centered. He
emphasized his relentless focus on ensuring that KeMU students consistently enjoy an unparalleled and
enriching experience during their academic journey.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Students affairs, Dr. Evans Mwiti echoed the Vice-
Chancellor’s sentiments, reiterating his full commitment to supporting the KeMUSA council. He assured
the university’s steadfast dedication to ensuring all students receive comprehensive support. In a
gesture reflective of the university’s commitment to accessibility, he warmly encouraged students to
utilize the open-door policy and feel free to him anytime they encounter an issue, reinforcing an
environment of approachability and care.
Further strengthening the message of institutional backing, Dr. Stephen Mutungi, the Registrar
Administration, Planning and Development, extended his congratulations and committed the full
support of his office to the new leadership. These sentiments resonated throughout the ceremony,
finding strong endorsement from Dr. Susan Laimaru, Principal of the Nairobi campus and Dr. Justus
Bundi, Director of the Mombasa campus, who encouraged the entire council, including the campus

committee, to work collaboratively and diligently to ensure that every student at ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨
University is fully supported in their academic and personal growth.
The swearing in ceremony itself was described as both bubbly and distinguished. This marked a pivotal
moment for ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨ University with anticipated of fresh perspectives, strengthen student
engagement and further elevate the student experience, aligning with the university’s overarching
commitment to fostering a holistic and supportive educational environment.
